heather turns brown
leaves flutter into pools of
mud, created by tears of
despair, carried by cavernous
clouds, fleeing across
skies of doom

today as i sit
watching life migrate by
a season going comes
out to play one
last time, one last
day as life returns

nooks and crannies
warmed for one last
time, insects play
the last scene of
their lives before a
sun sets one last time

Our cat Mitzy is outside, sat on the doorstep minding her own business, doing nothing to anyone. Then she is dead, shot with an air rifle by the young lad across the street. He never said why he shot her and never said sorry. This is my first experience of death and how brutal and evil some people can be.

you first came to my house
ran to the cellar, a blur
disappeared into the darkness
made it your home for weeks
one day i saw you
for the first time ever
as you walked out the door
left, forever i thought…
days later you came back
i was the chosen one
who would be looking after you
climbing trees with ease
faster than a shooting star
playing in sun
sleeping in snow
chasing mice for fun
birds a present for me
fights with Jodie
who will sleep on my knee
you enjoyed life
as queen of the street
growing older you
slow down preferring
cuddles to fights
getting softer with age
i believed you would
live forever
but the day came
when your body
could take no more
as you wrapped your paw
around the tip
of my finger
purred one last time
said goodbye daddy
i knew it was your time
to go to Rainbow Bridge
to play with Jodie
and the other
cats and dogs
just the way
you did when you
was young
furever

from the first light of the flickering filament
to the soiling of that clean white nappy
playing with toys, learning the rules of life
that scary first day with other frightened kids
and the years of listening and learning that follow
to end up cast into a world of love and hate
hunting for jobs to help me build a life
drinking in haunts to help me forget i live
meeting my first and only true love
repopulating the planet with my seed
watching them grow into miniature versions of me
as they repeat the process of life that i have been through
we grow old together and head towards
the unavoidable fate that besets all humanity
leaving behind all that we know and love
these are the memories of life i have accumulated
refuse festering in the dustbin of my mind

heather turns brown

leaves flutter

into pools of mud

tears of despair

carried by clouds of hope

flee across skies

of blue tinged with grey

as life migrates

a season passing by

plays out one last time

every nook and cranny

warmed by dying rays of light

insects play one final scene

before lives end

as the sun sets

on a barren landscape

that goes to sleep and

awaits the return of life

The gate leans against the farmer

Digging into a sack of history

Stained with the smells of youth

That transparent, darkened raindrops

Have failed to fade into obscurity

Desperate to talk to the flesh of a dinosaur

Slowly rotting away under armour plated skin

Keeping out cold as bacteria thrives in warm flesh

Eating him alive, inside to out

Slowly killing him as time passes by

The gate watches, listening to the farmer

Sigh with nicotine filled lungs

Black with tar, a hole from no escape

Life is sucked in a one way passage

From this life to the next

where did you come from

silently sneaking up on me and

attacking me when I wasn’t ready

why did you choose me

out of millions and millions

why me, why me

to invade my body with your

swarming seeds flowing around

my body, killing me slowly

leaving me in constant pain

barely able to move or breathe

fighting to stay alive

as you explore every part of me

seeking and destroying

my very soul, taking me alive

in order that you may live

and I will die taking you

with me in my final hour

would it be your victory

or would it be mine

even in death

but I am strong

stronger than you realise

stronger than you will ever know

and I will fight you

for every hour of every day

wherever I go I will fight

to stay alive and beat you

destroy you, defeat you

to rid my body of you

and I will fight forever

to remain alive for another

minute in this world

and see you defeated

once and for all

gone forever

I want to see the

sun rise

the moon dance

leaves blown by the wind

streams racing by

rain bounce off pavements

and I will do

because I will beat you

today, tomorrow, forever
