It’s a cold, dark January morning. Snow covers the roads and pavements, icicles hang from roofs, my breath is a cold, grey fog. I need the toilet, it’s outside. I don’t want to go outside and stand in the small, dark, damp space that is our toilet. I have to though. I have no choice but to stand there shivering, alone in the darkness.

sky darkens
in an instance
light is gone
i knew where
i was and now
i’m lost
i could be anywhere
all I know is
i am here
wherever here is

the light is our landmark
in the death of darkness
we followed the rhythmic

swell of a tempestuous sea
hungry for wood and flesh
to take to the bottom

the light is our sign
that we are close to home
and the warmth of safety

that we have a chance
of surviving this night
that we live to love

our families once again
the light gives us
hope and courage

to continue on
without the light
we would be
swimming with the devil
